Within a few minutes. Maybe fifteen, we heard the familiar sounds of a huey helicopter coming towards us. We had obviously been pinned by the ambush, and so our commander had called for some air support. Soon, the helicopter roared over us and began making passes at the enemy machine gun position ahead. Even though it was only a single gunship, it was awesome to watch. We could see the right side door gunner; a black soldier with a white helmet. We watched as he leaned far out the door, watching that position while the huey made it turn right over me and Craig and then flew up for another pass while that gunner fired non-stop. A we watched, Craig came up with an idea we had never considered. He told me that just as soon as we got back into the camp, he planned to volunteer to be a door gunner, just like that guy. I was pretty skeptical, until he explained that as door gunners, we would always sleep in a cot, inside a perimeter, and we would always get hot food. No more humping along out here in the jungle, sweating our a**es off.

I'm thinking Craig might have changed his mind when he hit his first Hot LZ. He might not have know about overniting at a special forces outpost with the 4 am mortor attacks. Or what a nice target hueys were. Bet Craig played hell finding a tree or rock to jump behind after he became a gunner. Jak the gunner

You can find it at http://www.oldwarriors.com I have written a book, and a couple sequels, plus have two documentaries and a music video regarding my time back in the day, should anyone be interested:  http://www.brianwizard.com I hope peace and prosperity has shined upon you all and life is good . . . as good as it can get, all things considered. Thanks, Bill. Cheers, Brian Wizard

Thank you for this web site, it is a beginning and will grow. A friend asked me a while back who I really was. I believe that this period of our lives, when we were 18,19 and 29 years old shaped out live. Regardless of where we came from or how high risen since, or how low we have fallen. This site and its contents are who we really are. Time will futher define us as the site grows. I believe I will send a link to my friend, he will know who I really am. Im proud of who I and WE are. Attitudes have changed over the last 30 years and others need to know who we really are. Thank you, a door gunner.

I have written a book on the OUTLAWS @ VINH LONG for the period of 1966-67. It can be viewed and purchased over Amazon.com---or by contacting me directly. This is past the period when the 25th Inf. Div. door gunners were first coming down to the Delta, but my door gunner was from this unit, and continued the proud tradition of flying in the Hueys with the Outlaw aviators. I remember when I first got to Vinh Long Sep 65. The 25th Infantry doorgunners were a big part of the 502 & 114th aviation companies. They were very noticable with their red and gold patches.I eventually became friends with them. I am still friends with them today. I,m hoping we can find more of them. Great site!! Thanks for you time and effort. I have located a couple of old friends through the site. I was not in the shotgun program but was a door gunner for 13 months. Like many others I served on both gun ships and slicks. It was the worst of times and the best of times. But it I think the worst is catching up to me, I was wondering if I was alone in this. I think a lot anymore about the friends who did not come back and those that were sent out wounded. I wonder what happened to them, perhaps they will find me in the roster and email me. That would be nice. I am listed in the roster so if you see me and remember me drop me a line. Time is passing I wonder how many are still here. This site is a great help. Thanks. A fellow helicopter door gunner

They said I would be changed in my body. I would move through the physical world in a different manner. I would hold myself in a different posture. I would have pains where there was no blood. I would react to sights, sounds, scents, movement, and touch in a crazy way, as though I were back in the war. They said I would be wounded in my thoughts. I would forget how to trust, and think that others were trying to harm me. I would see danger in the kindness and concern of my relatives and others. Most of all, I would not be able to think in a reasonable manner, and it would seem that everyone else was crazy. They told me that it would appear to me that I was alone and lost even in the midst of people, that there was no one else like me. They warned me that it would be as though my emotions were locked up and that I would be cold in my heart and not remember the ways of caring for others. While I might give soft meat or blankets to the elders or food to the children, I would be unable to feel the goodness of these actions. I would do these things out of habit and not from caring. They predicted that I would be ruled by dark anger and that I might do harm to others without plan or intention. They knew that my spirit would be wounded. They said I would be lonely and that I would find no comfort in family, friends, elders, or spirits. That I would feel deserted and abandoned by the same. I would be cut off from both beauty and pain. My dreams and visions would be dark, frightening, and unending. My days and nights would be filled with searching and finding. I would be unable to find connections between the rest of creation and myself. My isolation would be a way of dealing with my loneliness. That I would look forward to an early death. And , I would need cleansing and healing in all these things. Author "Unknown Native American" VietNam Veteran!

Just the other day I was talking to a good customer and I heard a chopper overhead I mentioned to him I had to hang up and pop smoke so that chopper would land and know where the friendleys are. He laughed and said he knew exactly what I meant. come to find our he was in the Delta the same time I was in the Central Highlands. Hey Guys, THANKS!is woefully inadequate so let me Salute you all for being there when we needed you. Hi my name is Megmer "Mike" Moschkin and I served with Shotgun X from June to September 1965. We were all from the (Alpha CO. for me) 1st Battalion 27th Inf.(HI)that went to Pleiku to serve at Camp Holloway. We lost two gunners from our group Lt. Ball (xo A1/27) and best friend Johnny R. Triplitt were KIA. I was WIA at Cheo Reo Special Forces Camp in June also(?) near the mouth of the I-Drang Valley. We were there when the 1st Cav. came in Aug. 1965 to Anh ke Pass. We were involved in the lifting of the siege on Duc Co Special Forces Camp next to the Cambodian Border, into which we flew over to get out of Duc Co, they were waiting for the left bank and the pilot took a right bank out. With the rattling of my M-60 and he asked why, I told him to keep their heads down and he said good show gunner as we carried away six or seven dead Moutain Yard bodies wrapped in punchos to Camp Holloway. Sickest day of my life that taste of death lingers in my mouth still. Thank you for this site to remember our fallen comrades on this special program of courage by the men of the 25th ID. My Wolfhound experiences in 1966 overwhelmed my sense of being as the "UNknown Author" Native American said all of our spirits have been wounded and to the person who asked/or mentioned LT. Yee (on Feb 20th,)replaced LT. Ball after he Ball was killed. He lives in Hawaii and has an E-mail address also plus many pictures of Hawaii,Vietnam 1965, and A1/27 1966. Wolfhounds forever

Triplett KIA 7/20/65 (2A1/27), we came from the same squad in the 2nd platoon in 1965.(Johnny Triplett was killed while flying gunner on a dusk patrol mission around the perimeter of Camp Holloway, one in a million shot to the chest, unfortunately I saw him humped over belted in above his own pool of blood. A real gentle soul rest in peace my brother.) Please drop the v from my name on the roster it Moschkin.

145th Combat Aviation Batallion. This organization is very important to Shotgunners. in the earley days of helicopter flying in Viet Nam most aviation companies past thru the 145th CAB. Jim Bodkin is mostly a one man show trying to gather up people and history. Many of the people in his directory have now changed addresses. We cant expect Jim to spend all his time continueley looking for the same people. Just the same there are several listed from those earley units. If you are interested in who had beed found in the 145th CAB directory contact me and I will e-mail you any information there might be in Jims directory.Doug Wilson C/E Maverick 35 1965-66 Vinh Long VN  junglecruise@surfbest.net

Hey ..Why don’t you guys turn this into an association? Viet Nam Shotgunners Association. You have a hell of a start already, looks like you are getting lots of traffic to the site and the roster is building fast. Shotgunners represent all of the Aviation Units that were in Vietnam 63 until 66. I am sure Pilots and Crew Chiefs would also join. We could have reunions a news letter etc. Just a thought. I’m not including my name because I learned the hard way not to volunteer from the Army, After all that how I became a Shotgunner. Bro******* If I only knew then what I know now!! HELL BRO****** I WOULD DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN………..WELCOME HOME. LOOKING FORWARD TO GETTING TOGETHER AT OUR FIRST REUNION

Anyone who went to helicopter flight school in the mid-60's understood that flying helicopters was inherently a "risky business." On my first day on the flight line at Fort Wolters Texas, after completing an orientation flight with me, my flight instructor pilot (IP) took my "stick buddy" up for a flight. The two of them were killed instantly when the OH-23D they were flying hit a tree on a bank of the Brazos River. The next day, we had a new IP and we "drove on". Anyone, who went to helicopter flight school during that period, had similar stories of accidents that most people never heard of--- except for our wives, who waited and wondered. The helicopter air crews, pilots, crew chiefs and door gunners were an integral team, sharing the same dangers and totally dependent on one another to complete the mission. Not enough credit has gone to those crew chiefs and gunners who worked the long hours to make sure the aircraft were mission ready and who showed incredible courage to go back into the fire to save the pilots. No one, who hasn't thundered through the skies of Vietnam in a helicopter, can know what that experience was like. Most helicopter crews had more than one tour in Vietnam and had their aircraft hit by enemy fire many times. Most of us had been shot down at least once and we knew that combat flying in Vietnam was living on the edge all the time. Over the battlefields, you could hear the thunder of helicopters that put fear in the hearts of the enemy and brought comfort to our troops on the ground.

I found this statement on my units website, thought you guys might like to read it. Sir, First of all, I always wondered one thing about pilots; How do you walk with those giant, brass balls? I was an aviation Medic, with the 54th Aereomedical Evacuation Helicopter Co. (HA) in Chu Lai, in 68. (Actually I was assigned to the 534th Med. Det with the 1st Aviation BDE, 14th CAB, but was authorized to fly so I farmed out to the 54th) I read your tribute to the Medic and Crew chief, and on my end I have to give credit to those of you that flew into the bowels of Hell, _ucked the Devil himself, allowed us the opportunity to do our jobs, and brought us back out again, mostly in one piece. Mostly ... though there were those times that the Devil won ..... I wish to thank you, as a medic, a father, and a husband. If not for you, and many more like you, I would not be here writing you today, and because of you (all of you), there are other veterans out there today as well. My wish for you and all the other Army helicopter pilots is that you always have a full fuel cell, the skies are clear, and that God laughs with you. Clear Right ! Christopher Doc

Roger: I started the site to bring together our group. So far it has been a one man effort. The big problem is that there were only around 2000 of us, not a large number. I have gotten the site to a point of visibility. A Google or other search engine will now bring the site up for anyone searching on the 25th Infantry division, door gunner, helicopter gunner and other similar searches. I have us listed by a lot of other Aviation units.........What we need is for more members of this site to put some effort into contacting their Aviation unit websites and asking the webmaster to link back to us.....Forming an association is a great idea and several others have spoken to me about it. The paper work and setting up a legal structure is beyond my knowledge. I would assist in anyway I could. We need members of the site who have the skills and are willing to serve as officers to come forth. It would be great to get together at a reunion. I have set up a new section listing gunners by Shotgun Platoon and showing the orders. We need site members to review these orders and contact other gunners who may not be aware of the site or who may not use the internet. I also need you guys to help me find copies of the orders we are missing. Here is a link to the Shotgun Orders I have now: http://www.25th-infantry-div-shotgunner.com/Shotgun%20Platoons/Shotgun%20Orders.htm Roger here is a link to one of the Wolfhound Shotgun Platoon orders for detachment 4: http://www.25th-infantry-div-shotgunner.com/Shotgun%20Platoons/SHOTGUN%2010%20DET%204.htm Please contact each other via the email addresses listed in the roster and we can get this going. To those of you who think this website is for your free advertisement: This is meant for honorable men who served their country. It is NOT here for your advertisement purposes. Why don't you show some respect to these men and get your stupid messages off this site? Your parents obviously did a horrible job of raising you. When you get done defiling this guestbook, you'll probably go to the airport to harass service men /women returning from overseas. You make me sick.

This is a great website and I hope that a lot of us shotgunners are able to hook up with ol' buddies. I'm really glad that I stumbled upon it. Bill Ball, you're doing a great job. Keep up the good work and let me know if there's anything that you need done here on Oahu to help. For all you Shotgunners out there...my name is Mel (Melecio) Gastelum, I was in Shotgun II (2), flying out of Tan Son Nhut. Our platoon leader was Lt. Ronald Beckett. We flew the old Korean era CH-21s with wooden rotor blades (and duct tape to cover the bullet holes). My unit back at Schofield was Co.B, 2nd Bn., 14th Inf. (Golden Dragons). I am looking for fellow platoon members (or friends of), that I served with. If any of you guys are out there, join in, sign the roster and increase our chances of hooking up with each other again. I'm proud to have served with you all. Lt. Beckett, Sgt. Holmes, Sgt. Peters, Sgt. Hicks, Atkins, Cole, Ficacci(the Greek), Sellers, Deunger...I had some photos of some of you guys posted in the "Photo Contributor's" link. I really would like to hook up with you guys again. I hope all of you are doin' alright. Lt. Beckett.....I owe you a HUGE favor for carrying "my weapon" back to Schofield for me. You know which one I'm talking about. I would like to have the chance to return the favor somehow. I remember one time that we went out on a mission and as we came in to a hot LZ we started returning fire. I noticed that every round coming out of my machine gun (30 cal.) was a tracer....it wasn't until we got back to Tan Son Nhut that I found out that the night before, you had sat up and very meticulously loaded 4 boxes of ammo with nothing but tracers. And somehow, the next morning loading up to go out on this mission, I ended up with your ammo. You were a little dissapointed, but you took it well, sir. Afterall, there was always the next mission right? I gotta say, that it sure made for a pretty sight and it also increased my marksmanship. At least for that mission. If any of you guys ever get to read this......contact me via email. My address is posted in the "Door Gunner/Crew Chief roster". Aloha and WELCOME HOME. Brothers always, Mel

. to second Mr. Cheney's comments, when I was discharged from the Army in 1964, I was already preaching to my friends and family regarding the error (as I saw it; of course, using a map to point out the exact location to people who could not quite picture where this sadly divided nation might be) of direct involvement in the long going Vietnam Revolution by the United States (I had already watched quite a few members of my unit volunteer to go over - mostly as a sure way of making rank - as helicopter gunners) . . . anyway, when I saw MAJOR DUNDEE in 1965, I was stuck by how the story and characters seemed to reflect my doubts and fears regarding this adventure, and spoke to what appeared to be the coming disaster . . . I suppose this is why I have always had a soft spot for this flawed film - the bravery of its argument, particularly at a time when few were listening - and anticipate the chance to see this latest version of the film . . . I have no idea if a modern audience will enjoy MAJOR DUNDEE as I did/do; perhaps, it is one of those films that is best enjoyed as being "of its time" by those who were there - I hope this is not the case as, to me, it will always be an important transitional film by an important director . . . did Peckinpah intend his movie to be a comment on the then current (1964/65) situation; well, if he did not, it sure was easy to read that way . . .

Found this about McGee on another site........Mike Posted by: Dennis C Eichler Date: Sunday, June 12, 2005 3:41 AM UTC Relationship: Friend From: Chicago Comments: I served with Richard McGee in Hawaii with the 25th Division. I arrived in Hawaii in January of 1965. I know our enlistment dates were within months of each other. I lied about my age and joined the Army at 16 years old, in September 1964. Richard wasn't much older. We were actually in the same squad. (1st squad) Company A 2nd Battalion 35th Infantry, 3rd Brigade. I signed up for the same Shotgun program Richard was in, but I was not accepted. Richard left for Vietnam around September 1965. We later deployed to Vietnam and were stationed at Pleiku. I heard but could not verify, that when Richard's tour with the Shotgun program was over, he could have returned to our company, A-2-35, but chose to stay with his Door Gunner company. In June of 1966, I was wounded seriously enough to get out of the Nam and to Japan. June, July and August 1966 were bad months for our company. We had many casualties and Richard knew many of them since he had served with us in Hawaii. It was in Japan that I learned of Richards death through the Stars and Stripes. I was very saddened. Richard was top notch. I respected him very much as a person and as a soldier. He was so young and so brave. Before he left Hawaii for the Nam, he gave me one of his well tailored fatigue shirts which I wore until I was discharged in September 1967. His uniforms were always tailored and his appearance encouraged me to emulate his style. If you look at the photo of Richard on this post, you will see that he is wearing the 1st issue Vietnam fatigue shirt. The one were the buttons show through the pocket flaps. I have a photo of myself wearing the shirt that Richard gave me. It too, was the old style. I was lucky to survive the Nam. Richard died a hero, doing what he was truly meant to be.....A Door Gunner. I know he was brave on every mission he went on. The job of a Door Gunner is not for those who are afraid. Door Gunners are special and I always repected and admired them when I flew on Choppers and I thought of Richard when I looked at the face of each Door Gunner. I wish I could have seen him in the Nam. God Bless Richard and his family. He was one of a kind and is remembered by many. It's hard to believe that so many years have passed. I'm retired now from the Chicago Police Department after over 33 years of service

We volunteered for Door Gunners in Vietnam and went there and served together. He slept on the top bunk and I slept on the bottom bunk. We usually flew together everyday. I have tried to contact his family for nearly 40 years. If anyone remembers me, please contact me.
